Gatco 1395 Franciscan Premier Glass Shelf, Chrome

Gatco 1395 Franciscan Premier Glass Shelf, ChromeThis is a lovely product, but spectacularly difficult to install. There is no template or anything to guide one in drilling the holes and putting up the brackets, and there is no way to adjust the brackets to fit the item, not even a fraction of an inch side to side or up and down. One must be right on the money the first time or drill lots of holes, because the placement of the four mounts is not adjustable.

We tried making a template by assembling the item first, and then placing it on a somewhat stiff piece of paper and marking the placement of the screw holes for the brackets. This helped a lot, but the brackets were still a tad off. My husband had to take the brackets to his workshop and redrill the holes so that the bracket could be shifted slightly up and down and side to side (I mean, just a miniscule amount).

So, if you are up to some frustration installing this, it is a terrific item. Now that it is on the wall, I love it.

If you are planning to buy the item, seriously reconsider buying from eQuip. They are not good about sending the right item, blame the user for being one digit off, and they charge both an obscene return fee and an obscene restocking fee. There are many other places online which allow returns for similar items if the first did not work out--and charge the same price or less--so I cannot recommend working with eQuip. Be sure to look at their order/return policy, because it is not user friendly.

I love the shelf now that it is installed. The product is very good quality. In my opinion, the one huge oversight is that they did not include a template. I am very handy but found it challenging to install. As mentioned in another review, there is very little room for deviation in drilling the holes. So, I bought a large piece of poster board for less than a dollar to make a template. TIP! Before making template, make sure the glass pieces are pressed firmly into the shelf brackets. (I did not do this before I marked my template and my shelves were not firmly in the brackets, so I had to redo my template after I firmly pressed the shelves in to the brackets.) You can install 8 screws using the enclosed drywall screw hangers, but that is way over kill in my opinion. The unit is heavy and the additional screws will not hurt, but screws of this size are rated at about 50 pounds each. It looks wonderful on the wall and compliments the other franciscan accessories I bought.

This shelf is great because I have a small bathroom and the clear heavyduty safetyglass doesn't look like it takes up room on my wall. If you are not handy, I can imagine that it would be pretty difficult to install. The tools I used were a screwdriver, leveler, screw & anchors, pencil.

Tip: The cardboard inserts inside the box are the same size as the glass, so I used that as my measuring guage to distance the bases. Install a top corner base first, then use the cardboard to judge where the other bar/base should go. (make sure it is level too)

It came with NO directions. After a month of fooling with it, figuring out how to install it, patching holes, working to get level, it is finally up.

It is very well made. I like it but it is not worth all the time and aggravation by far,
